Winter (roughly December through February) is Kashmir's most dramatically different season — Srinagar turns cold and quiet, Gulmarg becomes a working ski resort, and some of the summer's outdoor activities pause while entirely different ones (skiing, snow walks) take over.
Quick Facts
- Coldest month
- January (Srinagar nights can drop below 0°C)
- Best for snow/skiing
- Gulmarg, late December through February
- Road access
- Generally open on the main Srinagar-Gulmarg-Pahalgam circuit, occasionally disrupted after heavy snowfall
- Crowd levels
- Lower than summer, except around New Year and specific snow-chasing weekends
What Winter Actually Looks Like
Srinagar itself doesn't get snowbound the way people sometimes expect — the city stays functional, houseboats run heaters, and sightseeing continues, just in cold, sometimes foggy conditions. Dal Lake occasionally partially freezes in especially cold spells, which is a notable sight when it happens but isn't guaranteed every winter. The real snow experience is concentrated in Gulmarg, and to a lesser extent Pahalgam and Sonmarg.
Gulmarg: The Winter Highlight
Gulmarg is genuinely worth prioritising in a winter itinerary — the Gondola runs (weather permitting) over snow-covered slopes, and skiing/snowboarding options exist for complete beginners through advanced skiers. January and February usually offer the most reliable snow cover, though this varies year to year.
What to Pack
- Heavy insulated jacket (down or equivalent) — layering underneath, not just one thick coat
- Thermal base layers
- Waterproof, insulated boots with good grip for icy/snowy paths
- Gloves, warm hat, scarf
- Sunglasses (snow glare is genuinely strong on clear days)
- Moisturiser/lip balm — cold, dry air affects skin quickly
What Changes vs a Summer Trip
| Aspect | Summer | Winter |
|---|---|---|
| Gulmarg activity | Meadow walks, golf | Skiing, snowboarding, Gondola over snow |
| Crowds | Peak, especially June–August | Lower, except New Year period |
| Hotel prices | Peak rates | Often lower, except ski-season Gulmarg |
| Road reliability | Consistently open | Occasional weather disruptions |
| Houseboat experience | Open-air friendly | Cozy, heater-dependent, equally atmospheric |
Is Winter Right for Your Trip?
Winter suits travellers who specifically want snow and skiing, don't mind cold temperatures, and can build some flexibility into their schedule. If your priority is trekking, meadow walks, or the tulip garden, a summer or spring trip suits those goals better — winter and summer Kashmir are genuinely different trips, not just the same itinerary in different weather.
