Spring (March to May): Gardens, Blossoms and Fewer Crowds
Spring is when Kashmir's famous Mughal gardens and the Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden in Srinagar come alive, usually from late March into April depending on the year. Weather is mild in Srinagar but higher areas like Gulmarg and Sonmarg can still have leftover snow and cold nights into April, which is beautiful but means road access to some points can be limited early in the season.

Summer (June to August): The Classic Kashmir Trip
June to August is peak season for a reason — Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam and Sonmarg are all fully accessible, weather is comfortable (Srinagar days are typically 20–30°C), and this is also when most Indian families travel because of school holidays. The trade-off is higher hotel prices, more crowded viewpoints, and taxi/houseboat rates at their yearly peak. If you're coming primarily for greenery, meadows, and a comfortable all-round trip, this is the safest season to book.
Late June through August also overlaps with the Amarnath Yatra season, which increases traffic and accommodation demand along the Srinagar–Pahalgam and Srinagar–Baltal routes specifically — worth knowing if your itinerary passes through those towns during the yatra window.
Autumn (September to Early November): Chinar Colours and Calm
Many repeat visitors call autumn Kashmir's best-kept secret. If snow is the point of your trip, this is the only real window — and Gulmarg in particular becomes a genuine ski destination, with the Gondola running (weather permitting) and skiing/snowboarding options for beginners through advanced. Srinagar itself gets cold (sometimes down to freezing or below overnight, occasionally with the Dal Lake partially freezing in very cold years) but stays walkable, and houseboats run heaters. Road access to Gulmarg and Pahalgam can occasionally be disrupted after heavy snowfall, so winter trips benefit from an extra buffer day or two in the itinerary and a willingness to adjust plans around weather.
