Five days is enough to comfortably cover Kashmir's core circuit — Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam — without the rushed, one-night-per-place pace that longer wish lists sometimes force. This itinerary assumes you fly into Srinagar; adjust Day 1 if you're arriving by road or train via Jammu.

Quick Facts

Covers
Srinagar, Gulmarg, Pahalgam
Pace
Moderate — 1 travel day built in, not back-to-back long drives
Best suited to
First-time visitors, couples, families
Total driving
Roughly 280–320 km over the 5 days

Day 1: Arrive Srinagar, Dal Lake

Arrive and check into your houseboat or hotel. Spend the afternoon at the Mughal Gardens (Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh are the priority if time is short) and end the day with a sunset shikara ride on Dal Lake.

Day 2: Srinagar Sightseeing

Cover Shankaracharya Temple for the city view, the Indira Gandhi Tulip Garden if it's in season, and the old city (Jama Masjid, Hazratbal Shrine) in the afternoon. Leave the evening free for shopping — Pashmina, saffron and handicrafts.

Day 3: Srinagar to Gulmarg

Drive to Gulmarg (~1.5–2 hours). Spend the day at the Gondola (both phases, if operating and tickets are available) and, in season, skiing or a walk around the meadow. Overnight in Gulmarg, or return to Srinagar in the evening if you'd rather not change hotels.

Day 4: Gulmarg/Srinagar to Pahalgam

Travel to Pahalgam (roughly 2.5–3 hours from Srinagar). If you arrive by early afternoon, fit in Betaab Valley the same day; otherwise start the valley circuit the next morning.

Day 5: Pahalgam Valleys, Return to Srinagar

Cover Aru Valley and Chandanwari in the morning, then drive back to Srinagar in time for your onward flight or departure — build in a comfortable buffer, as the return drive plus valley visits can run long if you start late.

If you'd rather not pack up and change hotels each night, an alternative is to base in Srinagar the whole trip and do Gulmarg and Pahalgam as long day trips — it's less efficient with driving time but simpler logistically, especially with young children.

Adapting This Itinerary

  • Adding Sonmarg: swap one Pahalgam night for Sonmarg, or extend to 6–7 days to include both comfortably.
  • Honeymoon trips: consider one night on a well-reviewed houseboat and slightly less rushed pacing — see our Kashmir honeymoon guide for specifics.
  • Budget trips: day-trip Gulmarg and Pahalgam from Srinagar instead of changing hotels, which cuts accommodation costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 5 days enough for Kashmir?
Yes, 5 days is a comfortable amount of time to cover Srinagar, Gulmarg and Pahalgam without excessive rushing — it's one of the most common trip lengths for first-time visitors.
Should I stay in Gulmarg and Pahalgam overnight, or day-trip from Srinagar?
Overnight stays give you more relaxed mornings and evenings in each place; day trips from Srinagar save on packing/unpacking but mean longer driving days. Either works — it depends on your pace preference.
Can this itinerary include Vaishno Devi or Amarnath Yatra?
Not comfortably within 5 days — both typically need to be added as separate legs of a longer trip. See our Kashmir plus Vaishno Devi combined itinerary for a longer version.
